Facebook Encourages Users to Share Organ Donation Status

You can share your relationship status, where you work, your favorite music, what you ate for lunch, and now Facebook is encouraging you to share your organs.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Good Morning America today, that Facebook will now feature a tool to share your organ donor status.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 114,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a transplant. The new tool is an effort to raise awareness of organ donation among Facebook’s 900 million users.

“Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis,” Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said in a statement. “And we believe that by simply telling people that you’re an organ donor, the power of sharing and connection can play an important role.”

Facebook users can find the tool on their profile under the main status bar where you can choose to update your status, upload a photo, or update a “life event.” Select health and wellness under the life event option. The tool will also guide users to the appropriate donor registry
for your state.
